The Smallest Antelope

Meet the Dik-dik - the smallest antelope from Masai Mara, Kenya. It seems like the fairy of the mara, so small and delicate, so fast and hard to meet, almost like a myth.

While being in my 7-days wildlife photography journey in the Masai Mara, Kenya, in November 2021, I really hoped to meet this beautiful creature called the dik-dik! It's the smallest antelope, a grown dik-dik looks like a newborn cub of a normal antelope. I've heard about it, everybody was talking about how sweet and tiny it is and how hard to meet it because it hides a lot in the bushes. Well, being that small, of course that's what it'll do to survive!

When in the wild nature, you never can really predict where and when you'll meet the animals you want to meet. The rangers know best the animals' habits and territories, so they can try their best and guess where to go to find some "action" or animals for us to see. I've had a few wishes for this journey, and to see the dik-dik was one of them. I've heard about them for the first time during this journey, I didn't know about their existence before at all, but to hear how sweet and tiny these animals are, really made it obvious for me that I wanna meet these guys and even better if I would succeed to have at least one descent photo of it.

These creatures are so small and hesitant, they remind me of fairies, and spotting them was a really interesting metaphor and lesson for me.

In the Mara (means "lake" in the Maa - the Maasai Tribe's language), there are no rules, and I learned to release all expectations, while I can still wish for what I want to see. After 7 days of journey, in the last day, when I least expected it, just before our lunch break, we came across this sweet creature! It ran so fast from bush to bush, but there was this specific moment when it just stood and looked at us. It has the funniest nose!
